Will the Commission ever become a ‘Workplace of the Future’?

New Ways of Working in Public Administration

The European Commission (EC) has approved a Communication on a modern and flexible workplace of the future. The Communication is based on more than two years of analysis, consultations and exchanges.  The last report draws conclusions from these analyses and proposes a set of principles and recommendation for the future workplace in the EC.

The EC’s ambition is to modernize its working environment and offer its highly qualified staff the best means to work effectively, to collaborate within services and with external stakeholders, and finally, to allow its staff reconcile professional and personal life.

Therefore, according to the Communication, office space will be used flexibly in order to enable staff to work anytime and anywhere, across teams and locations. Staff will choose a place to work which is suitable to the task and may change during the day. Trust and feedback-based relationships should become central for both staff and managers as people take greater ownership of their work. This is the future in Public Administration.
