Note to DG HR on COVID-19 working conditions

Generation 2004 continues to take action on the working conditions issues raised by you: we have sent a further note to the director general of HR, Ms Ingestad, highlighting four of the most pressing:

  1. We request that HR address the patchwork of home schooling that families are currently experiencing to ensure a common, consistent approach across the European Schools and that HR do this via existing European Schools communication channels (e.g. the Office of the Secretary-General of the European Schools).
  2. Linked to that, we point out where parents (and children!) are not benefiting from the rules set out in HR’s Updated guidelines on telework (issued 30 March) specifically to accommodate this new home-schooling role and
  3. We query the lack of trust displayed in the general micromanagement of teleworking staff. We ask HR to ensure that the March guidelines are applied and to provide timely training for managers on the managing of remote teams: this is a new and difficult situation for us all, let’s identify and remove counterproductive management methods. Staff are already more than a little stressed!
  4. DG ESTAT is aiming to do just that: it is running an online survey to measure how staff are getting on in these difficult times. We consider this an excellent idea and propose HR undertake a similar exercise on a commission-wide basis in order to have a comprehensive overview and allow the relevant services to see what is running well and what still needs to be improved.

The situation worldwide and Commission wide is evolving: we’re here for you: get in touch!
